Helen Clara Baird

With her family by her side, the death of Helen Baird, 78 of Amherst occurred on Thursday, February 18, 2010. Born in Amherst, she was a daughter of the late Wilson and Catherine (Richardson) Rhindress.

Helen worked at Maritime Tel & Tel until she started her family. She then became a stay at home mom. She made a happy and loving home for all of us, including her mother Kate, who lived with us for 15 years. She returned to work for Sifto Salt in the mid sixties until her retirement at the age of 64. Her retirement years were spent gardening and making her yard a show place where people gathered to have prom and wedding photos taken.

Gordon and Helen worked together on many painting and woodworking projects. Their yard and kitchen was always open to anyone who just wanted to sit and chat. She will be remembered for her generosity and kindness, and she will be forever in our hearts.

Helen is survived by her husband of 59 years, Gordon; son Stephen (Dianna) of Calgary; three daughters, Lindy (David Ripley) Baird and Cathy (Frank) Ripley, both of Amherst, and Nancy (Hugh) Calder of Halifax; one brother; James (Andrea ) Rhindress of Amherst; grandchildren, Blaine Ripley, Shelley Calder, Jennifer Mills, Royleen Ripley; several great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, she was predeceased by a sister, Madeline (Ewan) MacDonald.

Cremation has taken place under the care and supervision of Furlong~Jones Funeral Home, 70 Church Street, Amherst (902-667-8777) from where a funeral service will be held at 2 pm on Sunday, February, 21, 2010. Rev. Byron Corkum officiating. Donations in Helen's memory can be made to the LA Animal Shelter or the charity of one's choice.
